Lincoln County newspaper announces OIAM events

Folks driving around Lincoln County this coming Saturday might notice a lot of people out and about in white T-shirts with a red and black logo that reads “Operation InAsMuch.” These people will be participating in a statewide mission effort that has members of 24 local churches reaching out to help their neighbors.

Hutchins said projects in Lincoln County will include several roofing and painting projects, making items for nursing home residents and shut-ins, cutting down trees for people and mulching local playgrounds. He says two teams are planning to just hang out at a coin-operated laundry and pay for people to wash and dry their clothes. “We’ve got one church that’s making meals for the entire prison in Lincoln County,” Hutchins said.

In determining which projects to tackle, Hutchins says the idea was to come up with things that all members of a church could do. Not everyone can climb up on a roof, so there are other projects for those folks to take on. And it seems the level of participation is exceptionally high. “We actually are getting more volunteers than we have time to put the projects together,” Hutchins said.

Hutchins estimates 500-600 people will participate in Lincoln County.

Big turn-out expected in Caldwell County

On Saturday, April 19th there will be 28 churches with 564 participants doing 50 projects in Caldwell County as part of Operation Inasmuch. In the seven years that the Caldwell Baptist Association has been doing Operation Inasmuch this is by far the largest participation we have had. We will begin on Friday night, April 18, with a rally at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Hudson and will have a finale at the church on Saturday afternoon after the work has been completed.

Sneads Ferry planning OIAM events

Our family of Jesus-lovers had a great meeting on Tuesday in Sneads Ferry. I know a few details that look to be exciting! We are all meeting at the Sneads Ferry Community Center at 7:30am. Biscuits will be available for $1 each as long as they last. A team will be preparing and delivering lunches for the workers at their sites, last I heard and those lunches are pre-paid.

Homer Prince is coordinating details. I know of details being conducted at several locations:

Sneads Ferry Senior Center: Youth are doing a yard/garden project
Laundromat: Several churches have put together collections of quarters for the Inasmuch team to load in to machines
Woodbury Nursing home visitation is planned
We have teams repairing flooring and plumbing for a family who have been without water for a year (Yikes!), removing a dangerous, dilapidated barn, repairing electrical outlet, mowing, power washing, building handicap ramp,
One team is baking cookies, planning a community prayer walk and visitation in homes

And Pray for energy, safety and seeds to reach fertile soils!

Grants Creek Missionary Baptist will have good showing

We have a total of nine Operation Inasmuch projects ranging from
Dover, N.C. (in Craven County) to the ARC Rest Home on Onslow Pines
Road. We have 83 people who have signed up and purchased shirts. We hope
they all show up.

The projects are:

Preparing coffee/doughnut breakfast fellowship and preparing/delivering lunches for all work teams
Cleaning the yard and power washing the house for a disabled couple
Power washing the house and deck and cleaning gutters for an elderly disabled lady
Replacing and painting house trim for another elderly, disabled lady
Replacing bath tub with a shower for an elderly couple
Cleaning and improving the nature trail at Silverdale Elementary School
Delivering home-made gift baskets to several rest homes and other shut-ins
Donating books and board games to Onslow Detox Center
Preparing and planting a vegetable garden at ARC Rest Home

Elizabeth City is ready to do OIAM

This note from Jeffery Russell at Salem Baptist Church near Elizabeth City, NC—

God has been so good to us here in northeast, NC that we just felt led to give something back. We are located in Weeksville, a small community about 10 miles south of Elizabeth City in Pasquotank County. These are the projects we are doing so far on April 19:

Cleaning up a yard and planting flower beds for an elderly resident. (Baptist Women)
Planting flower bed for the Volunteer Fire Department (GA’s)
Sponsoring a community food collection for Baptist Children’s Homes (Royal Ambassadors)
Giving out change for a local laundrymat (Acteens)
Washing windows and pumping gas for customers at the local “corner store” (Challengers and Baptist Men).

Thus far we have about a third of our active members involved in this project. Pray that God will give us clear weather with a heart to witness as we share His love on April 19.

Rally gets Martin County ready

Martin County has nine churches participating in the great ministry opportunity of Operation Inasmuch. Eight of the nine churches are participating for the first time and are excited about the opportunities to serve. Martin County had a county-wide Operation Inasmuch Rally at Piney Grove Baptist Church Sunday evening, April 13. They had a meal at 5 p.m. and a worship rally at 6 p.m. To God be the glory!

Churches work together

Operation Inasmuch will be covering Edgecombe County on April 19 thanks to the support of area churches. Pinetops Baptist Church will host their first ever Operation Inasmuch on this day. West Edgecombe and Oakdale churches also plan to do community ministries. Tarboro First Baptist will celebrate their 10th Operation Inasmuch with the assistance of Mildred Missionary and Acorn Hill church. To begin the day, an appreciation breakfast will be served to all EMS workers, police, fire and town employees. A Handyman Ministry will do construction projects. Ladies will teach crocheting of baby items to inmates at a local facility who will then donate their handwork to newborns at the local hospital. One Sunday School class will host a block party for residents of a low-income housing project featuring games, health screening, puppet shows and distribution of gift bags to residents. A team will putt together bags of encouragement for 243 employees at three local schools. These are just a few of the 15 projects planned for the day. Scotts Creek leads the way

Scotts Creek Baptist Church in Sylva led the way for North Carolina Baptists to follow in Operation Inasmuch. To avoid a conflict with the local school spring break, Scotts Creek did Operation Inasmuch early. On Saturday, April 5, members of Scotts Creek headed out across their local community to share the love of Jesus Christ with people in need. Church members took heed of the words of Jesus Christ, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthews 25:40). They accomplished several ministry projects to share the love of Jesus. One group began construction of a handicapped access ramp to allow a resident to return to her home after she fell and broke her hip. According to volunteer Al Undeen, “Building a handicapped access ramp is a practical way to be of help to senior adults with limited mobility. Having a ramp built allows older adults to maintain their independence by improving their access to their homes. I’m glad to have had the opportunity to help people in need.”

A second group led by Minister of Youth Mark Rogers cleaned the building used by United Christian Ministries (UCM). Scotts Creek Baptist Church is a long-time supporter of UCM. A third group went to Mountain Trace Nursing Home to sing for the residents and give them cards prepared by the children.

Scotts Creek Baptist Church began an annual mission project called “Down Home Missions” in 2000 and has accomplished a variety of mission projects in the Sylva community each year. According to pastor Rich Peoples, “Doing these projects demonstrates the commitment of our church to sharing the love of Jesus locally. In addition to our ongoing work elsewhere in the United States and around the world, these short-term projects remind us that Christ’s love is for every person. Churches ready in Chowan

Mike McArthur, Operation Inasmuch coordinator for Chowan County, said Chowan County is the smallest, but one of the most beautiful counties in North Carolina. Chowan County is surrounded by rivers, sounds and bays and is less than 90 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. God is at work throughout these seaside communities and seven of the county’s 10 Baptist churches are participating in Operation Inasmuch. Volunteers will show appreciation for law enforcement officers through prayers, gifts and goodies and desserts will be made for the monthly firefighters’ dinner. Volunteers will make neck pillows for senior adults and build play equipment for a foster care provider. Shut-ins will be ministered to through yard work, landscaping and home repairs. Hygiene kits will be delivered to the local Crisis Pregnancy Center and the children’s choir will perform at nursing homes. Senior adult Sunday School classes will form prayer teams to pray for Operation Inasmuch ministries and volunteers. For more information, contact McArthur at (252) 482-8700.
